You know those points in your life when everything is going alright, you’re all good, and then suddenly, you’re just not? Your (normally enjoyable) job becomes burdensome. That daily commute drains all of the energy and life out of you. Every minor inconvenience is now […]

January, often, is a time of strict diets, juice cleanses, and trips to the gym. We all feel those few extra pounds from the holiday season (I know I had my fair share of cookies) and we just can’t wait for the fresh start that […]
The “Morning Look-Around.”
A term coined by none other than my wonderful boyfriend, Nick.
Since getting together with him, we’ve spent many mornings together. Be them slow and leisurely, or quick and hustling, he’s got this one habit that’s present each and every day.
He sits quietly, either on the couch, kitchen chair, or right in bed, and just…looks around. No phone, no food, no distraction of any kind. A calm expression across his face.
If I’m being honest, I used to worry when he did this. He’s rarely a quiet person, and when I first started noticing him being oddly silent in the mornings, I worried I made him upset.
I can be pretty high strung in the mornings – well, all of the time. My anxiety gets triggered when I feel as though I’m wasting time, so I start my mornings early, and go through my days quickly. Even if I’m waking up just to have breakfast, and run some errands, I prefer waking up in the single digits. It just feels better for me if I’m out of bed early. If I’m still in bed by 10am, its bound to be a doozy of a day.
Nick on the other hand, is leisurely with his time. He rolls out of bed when he likes, and takes his time starting his day. He’ll mosey upstairs to join me in the kitchen, where I already have a fresh pot of coffee brewed, a light breakfast in front of me, and am in the midst of blog work.
Cue: The Morning Look-Around.
Once I started noticing his habit, it became a little joke between us.
Almost like we acknowledge our difference in pace, and he reminds me to slow down and take a breath.
“You alright, babe? Kinda quiet.”
“Yeah hun, just having a look-around.”
In the age of hustle and bustle, and with the lines between work hours/personal hours continually blurring, it’s important to take some time each day to settle.
A Morning Look-Around forces you to slow down.
We all wake up and reach for our phones, our planners, our whatevers. And I know when we have a busy day, week, life, it’s hard to sit down and rest. But a leisurely morning can set the stage for a more productive day.
A few moments of peace and quiet before the day even begins will lower your risk of burn-out in the afternoon, because you already rested. That break you crave around 3pm? You already gave it to yourself. That lull in productivity and focus will diminish, and you’ll be able to finish out your day with as much gusto as you began.
A slow morning allows for more enjoyment of your routine – instead of chugging your cup of joe, savor it. Make yourself breakfast instead of grabbing a banana and running out the door. Acknowledge the rising sun and the light it brings. Prepare yourself for your day ahead.
Your look-around might be like Nick’s, just a few minutes of a clear mind, taking in your surroundings.
Some days, my look-around consists of a few moments of silence and pushing the stressful, anxious thoughts out of my mind. Or, I indulge in the book I’m reading currently. Other times, I use that morning time to plan my day. I love using my Productivity Planner or even just a notebook to write down important meetings, responsibilities, and tasks I can expect over the next few hours.

Now let me ask you, how do you start your mornings?
Do you roll out of bed with just enough time to get ready and scurry out the door? Or do you wake up with enough time to enjoy a meal, take your time getting ready, and settle yourself for the day?
